Vegan Food Blog | The Best Vegan Tacos in Da Nang, Vietnam

To be completely honest, finding vegan tacos in Da Nang City was a challenge I wasn’t expecting. As a California native, it was imperative— my calling if you will, to discover the best places to chow down on some damn good tacos.

I do regret to inform you that this list is small, not because there aren’t many options, but because there are only two options that really stand out.

I’ve had tacos from several places in the city and frankly, most places are really lazy in their delivery. If you like the classic tortilla, rice, and frozen vegetables vibe that most restaurants offer out here, by all means, go wild. But, for those of you that enjoy more complex flavor profiles, let’s talk about Khong Vegan.

Khong Vegan is hands down the best vegan restaurant in Da Nang. Everything on their menu is absolutely delicious, plus the owner and staff are SUPER friendly and welcoming.

Khong Vegan boasts a variety of protein options including teriyaki tofu, cauliflower, fried oyster mushroom, and so many more. It truly doesn’t matter which filling you pick, they all taste like heaven on Earth. Now, let’s look at a few of their taco options and what makes them so damned good.

My personal favorite and their most popular option is the KFC Mushroom Taco. It’s made with locally sourced oyster mushrooms, purple cabbage, tomato, onion, spicy salsa, avocado, and their own house-made crema sauce. *chefs kiss*

It's not just good, it's spectacular and for $1.75 you really can't get anything better. The meatiness of the mushroom, the acidity of the salsa, and the fattiness of the avocado come together to create a perfectly layered flavor profile that cannot be found anywhere else.

If I had to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10 based on flavor, aesthetics, and overall satisfaction, it would get 10 marks in all categories, no questions asked.

For this next taco, I'm not going to lie, I was skeptical about it. I wasn't sure that teriyaki tofu belonged on a taco, but nonetheless, I was delightfully proved wrong.

Their Teriyaki Tofu Taco has a very unique taste to it. The robust, yet sweet flavor of the teriyaki sauce pairs well with the freshness of the salsa, and the richness of the avocado. It's basically like eating vegan sushi, except instead of being wrapped in rice and seaweed, it's in a fresh, soft, house-made tortilla.

For this one, I'll rate the flavor a 9, aesthetic a 9, and the overall satisfaction a 9 because it was a little too saucy for my taste, but still super filling and fun to eat.

This last taco is the perfect snack for midday, or when you're hungry, but don't necessarily want to be completely full. It's light enough to leave room for later, but filling enough to curb your appetite for a couple of hours while you're at the beach. Also, I maybe should have mentioned this earlier, but Khong Vegan is just a 4 minute walk from My Khe Beach and they deliver fresh and delicious tacos directly to the there if you ask them to...*mic drop.*

Their Cauliflower Wing Taco holds a very well-balanced palate. It's made with 3 pieces of fried cauliflower, purple cabbage, avocado, salsa, and homemade crema.

It's mild in comparison to the bold flavors provided by the previous tacos. However, all of its components work well together to deliver a very pleasurable taco eating experience for those that want something less heavy, or that don't want to kill their buzz after drinking on the beach all day. *ahem me*

On a scale of 1 to 10 this taco is a solid 8. It's light, it's refreshing, it tastes amazing, and no animals were harmed in its creation.

To conclude this segment, Khong Vegan has the best vegan tacos in Da Nang hands down; no one can argue it. Whether you're into KFC mushrooms, teriyaki tofu, cauliflower wings, or any of their other filling options you're going to leave with your mind blown. To this day, I can still walk in— well, order in because COVID, and have my expectations shattered and rebirthed into something better than I could have ever imagined.

The absolute best part about Khong Vegan is that they are always switching up their menu and developing their recipes. They've found the formula that works and now they are just creating an abundance of delicious vegan foods that I encourage everyone to try at least once in this lifetime.

Okay, I'm done raving about Khong Vegan and now I'll get into the last place I'll mention in this blog: Taco Ngon.

Taco Ngon is not a vegan restaurant; however they do have a few plant-based options for those that are out past 9pm (when KV closes), or for those that are a part of a larger, non-vegan dinner party.

Even though they only have two options, they do them extremely well. Vegans, vegetarians, and plant-based eaters have the classic veg options to choose from: french fries and fried tofu. They drizzle their vegan tacos with their own house-made tamarind barbeque sauce— the only sauce they offer that is vegan. It's tangy, sweet, a little spicy and pairs very nicely with both filling options. Honestly, one of the best parts about the sauce is that it's available to buy bottled, so you can add it to your own food at home— I highly recommend tossing it with your favorite vegan nuggets...it's a powerful combo.

While I could rave about their sauce all day, it's time to dive in to their tacos. To start, their potato taco is very satisfying. It's a simple build of french fries on a tortilla with veggies and BBQ sauce. It's a great snack, appetizer, or meal for those that aren't crazy about tofu, or can't eat soy.

Overall the potato taco gets a rating of 7/10, primarily because the potatoes aren't seasoned before frying, which is a crime in my own subjective opinion.

The best option at Taco Ngon is their tofu taco. It's juicy, meaty and always cooked to golden brown perfection. The tofu is rested on a soft tortilla, layered with a carrot and cabbage medley, and drizzled with that incredible tamarind barbeque sauce that puts Sweet Baby Ray's to shame.

Their Tofu BBQ Soft Taco gets a solid 9 out of 10 for flavor, 7.5 out of 10 for aesthetics, and a 10 out of 10 for overall eating experience. The juice from the tofu mixes with the BBQ sauce and drips onto the plate while you eat it, allowing you to continuously dip your taco into saucy goodness. The only thing better is the crunchy version of the exact same taco.

I can vividly remember when the owner asked me if I wanted my taco soft or crispy. The second she asked me, I knew my mind was about to be blown, and I'm so glad it was.

To make this taco, they first deep-fry their tortilla until it is perfectly crisp. Then they add the tofu, veggie medley, tamarind barbeque sauce, and a little sriracha. It's a simple build that is bursting with flavor and takes the experience from satisfying to spectacular.

Even if crunchy tacos aren't your thing, this one just might change your mind. Unlike other crunchy tacos that can be harsh on the tongue and gums, this one just melts in your mouth. It breaks apart so delicately and acts as the perfect vessel for transporting BBQ flavored tofu into your belly. On a scale of 1 to 10, the shell alone is a 10. It's like a crispy, fried cloud; and with all of the toppings incorporated, it's an 11 out of 10, hands down. It's the perfect taco, the taco of wet dreams, the taco you're told not to worry about... you get the point.

So now you know, the top places for vegan tacos in Da Nang are Khong Vegan and Taco Ngon. Both offer completely different flavor profiles and taco styles, and are mouthwatering in their own unique ways.

If you want a large variety of options, Khong Vegan is the place to go, especially on Taco Tuesdays— seriously, don't pass them up, you'll regret it. Their recipes are wonderfully creative and layered with great flavor that will transport you right into your own personal heaven. And, for those of you that are trying to find a place where everyone will eat, or a place that's open while you're out bar hopping, Taco Ngon is your spot. Their house-made tamarind barbeque tacos are killer and will leave you hooked, coming back for more.
